Children’s Integrated Services (CIS) – If you are the parent of a child age 6 or younger and you have questions or concerns about a suspected developmental delay or condition, CIS can help develop an action plan for your child and family, provide resources and services or make referrals and help you through any transitions to other community services. CIS also assists pregnant and postpartum women with questions or concerns about a condition or risk situation that impacts the mother’s or the baby’s health or safety and families that have questions or concerns about providing a stable, healthy environment for their children. Kingdom Childcare Connection – Child-care support services to support and assist families with their child-care needs in a variety of methods – child-care subsidy eligibility, child-care referral services, community outreach and the child-care resource development program. Umbrella, located at 1216 Railroad St., Suite C in St. Johnsbury, is the regional child-care resource and referral agency. A book-lending library for parents and providers is also available. NEKCA – Among the many community services Northeast Kingdom Community Action (NEKCA) offers, they have two Parent Child Centers: North, located in Newport; and South, located in St. Johnsbury. www.nekcavt.org.
NEKCA Parent Child Center North – Offers early childhood programs including a family education program/parenting groups, parent information resource center to give parents the tools they need to actively support their child’s education and child-are support services for child-care referrals and training for child-care providers. 70 Main Street, Newport, VT 05855. NEKCA Parent Child Center South – Hosts three preschool classrooms, two that provide part- and full-day options and a third specifically for 3-year-olds that operates three days a week for four hours a day during the school calendar. Preschool programs are offered through the collaboration of NEKCA, St. Johnsbury School District and Head Start. Vermont Department of Education – The Dept. of Education, individually and in collaboration with a number of other organizations, supports early education initiatives in many ways. Vermont school districts have the option of providing publicly funded prekindergarten (preK) education for 3- to 5-year-olds by establishing partnerships with qualified early care and education programs, by operating a preK program directly or by doing both. In addition to publicly funded prekindergarten education, there are an assortment of other programs including Early Education Initiative, Essential Early Education, Even Start Family Literacy and Title I Preschool/Migrant Preschool Services. Our public school systems include complete facilities from pre-kindergarten through the 12th grade, Head Start and summer school programs. Two of our local high schools, St. Johnsbury Academy and Lyndon Institute, are operated semi-public/private, meaning they are private secondary schools with tuition provided by the town to its residents. Students come from all over for these co-educational schools, grades 9-12.
