Culture & The Arts

While it may be true that the Northeast Kingdom is known for its spectacular landscape and many recreational opportunities, the region is also known for its many varied and diverse cultural and art activities, museums and events.

Take a look at our chamber events calendar, and you will see what we are saying, with a multitude of concerts, performances and functions being held throughout the tri-county region the entire year.

The following organizations include:

  • Bread & Puppet Theater - An eclectic group of musicians and performers who use puppets, masks, paintings and graphics to convey political thoughts and ideologies of the day to a larger audience.

  • Catamount Film & Arts Center - Offering nightly screenings of foreign and independent films (nightly screenings) in its two theaters, it also features the region’s most extensive ticket booking service, the largest art gallery in the area, music concerts, cabaret seating for 100 and more than 4,000 videos that can be rented.

  • The Craftsbury Chamber Players - In operation since 1966, this ensemble of talented musicians is devoted to playing live chamber music to music lovers throughout the Northeast Kingdom and state.

  • The Fairbanks Museum & Planetarium - The Fairbanks Museum is the nation’s oldest science education museum in the United States and features the state’s only public planetarium. It is also the home of the renowned “Eye on the Sky” weather meteorologists.

  • The Haskell Free Library & Opera House - Located astride the Canadian and American border - partly in Stanstead, Que. and Derby Line, Vt. - this building not only includes the two communities’ library but a performing space, the Opera House.

  • The Highland Center for the Arts is located in Greensboro and features a state-of-the-art performance theater that has multiple stage configurations (depending on performance), seating for 250 people, and a 100-seat small performance space.
  • `` - A member of the Vermont State Colleges, this college, which offers associate, bachelor’s and master’s degrees – features many musical and theatrical performances throughout the year.

  • The Old Stone House Museum - Located in a massive granite dormitory built in 1836, constructed by Alexander Twilight, the nation’s first African-American college graduate, the museum includes items from 19th-century fine art, folk art and objects of everyday life. Events are held throughout the summer at the museum.

  • St. Johnsbury Athenaeum & Art Gallery - Featuring one of the nation’s most spectacular libraries and the country’s oldest unaltered art gallery, the Athenaeum features author readings, performances and speakers throughout the year.

  • St. Johnsbury History & Heritage Center - Located just off St. Johnsbury’s historic Main Street, this center serves as a testament to celebrating, educating and preserving the rich history and legacy of St. Johnsbury.

North Country Hospital

North Country Hospital is a private, non-profit, acute-care community hospital serving 20 communities, based out of Newport. North Country Hospital blends medical expertise and technology with a genuine concern for people. Fully licensed/accredited.
