Old Stone House Museum & Historic Village

Brownington, VT

HOME OF CHOICE

A featured stop on the African American Heritage Trail of Vermont, the Old Stone House Museum & Historic Village boasts jaw-dropping, picturesque views from an era of Vermont seemingly untouched by time. African American Alexander Lucius Twilight called it the "home of his choice." Mr. Twilight was the first African American to graduate a United States college and serve in a state legislature.

Built by Mr. Twilight, the Old Stone House at the heart of our museum includes 21 rooms of exhibits focusing on 19th century life in Northern Vermont. The collection includes murals from Rufus Porter, rooms recreated from Twilight's day, furniture, textiles, photographs, pottery, folk and fine art, and many of the tools and utensils of daily life.

On our grounds, you will also find Twilight’s own house, the Samuel Read Hall House (now an AirBnB), the Cyrus Eaton House and its historic perennial gardens, Twilight’s original homestead, Giving Gardens, a heritage apple orchard, Prospect Hill and its obersvatory tower, a one mile+ interpretative hiking trail and several traditional barns. We are located in Historic Brownington Village, amidst 19th-century homes and a church, surrounded by farmland.
